What to Expect During Your Exam

Our eye examinations are thorough and designed to give you a comprehensive checkup of your visual system and overall eye health. Here is what you can expect from start to finish.

1. Pre-Testing with Our Technician

When you arrive, one of our trained optometric technician will get you started with a series of preliminary tests before you see the doctor. These include:

  • Visual acuity (how clearly you see)
  • Auto refraction (an estimate of your glasses prescription)
  • Visual field screening (your peripheral vision)
  • Color vision screening
  • Depth perception testing

2. Your Exam with the Doctor

Once pre-testing is complete, the doctor will perform a full comprehensive eye exam. This includes:

  • Entrance testing, which covers eye muscle function, pupil responses, and eye coordination
  • A digital refraction to determine your most accurate glasses or contact lens prescription
  • A contact lens evaluation if applicable
  • A slit-lamp exam to examine the front and back structures of the eye in detail

3. Retinal Examination

We offer an eye drop free option for your retinal exam using the Optos Silverstone. This advanced technology captures a wide-field image of your retina and also scans the layers beneath the retinal surface, giving the doctor a detailed look at your eye health. In some cases, traditional dilation may be recommended in addition to or instead of this option depending on your individual health needs.
